History: This Digital Wallpaper features an AI art presentation of Perkwunos, Zeus, Indra and Thor battling with a multi-headed mythical giant serpent. The digital wallpaper puts all four related thunder deities with a mythical giant multi-headed serpent to artistically reveal the ties and shared Indo-European legend of a thunder deity fighting a serpent. While Perkwunos is the direct Indo-European ancestor of Indra and Thor, Zeus, another thunder deity, with Indo-European roots, also shares many of his legends and traits - even though he did not directly evolve out of Perkwunos.
The legend of a thunder deity battling with a mythical serpent, was originally associated with Perkwunos, a thunder deity from the Pontic-Caspian steppes. Perkwunos was a Chalcolithic (Copper age) period thunder deity and later developed into Indra of the Rigveda (1500 Bce) and Thor ( 800 Ce) while his father developed into the figure of Zeus.
The Perkwunos legend of fighting with a multi headed mythical serpent is dated to 5000-4000 Bce. This very legend was later incorporated with the figure of Indra of the Rigveda around 1500 -1000 Bce as the legend of Indra and Vritra - a three headed serpent demon. The ancestors of the Indo-Aryan people were originally from the Pontic-Caspian region, and both Perkwunos and his legend was passed down the generations to be reproduced with local embellishments - thus while foundational myth of a thunder deity vanquishing a mythical serpent is the same, the retelling is different.
In the same manner, this very legend was also incorporated into Greek mythology as the legend of Zeus and Typhonomachy (Typhon), around 700-800 Bce and later into Norse mythology as the legend of Thor and Jormungandr, the Midgard serpent, 800 Ce - like in the case of Indra, the foundational myth is the same but the retelling takes a different route.
