Born on the 17th of August in 1815 A.D., Dalton was an officer of the East India Company who went on to become a political agent and later the commissioner of what is today the Chota Nagpur province of Jharkhand, but was then a part of the Bengal Presidency. He was also a Major General in the Bengal Lancers, a cavalry unit of the British Indian Army.
