History: Built in the 15th century, during the reign of the Sultan Sikander Lodi, the three-dome mosque was an innovation of its time and a product of Indo-Islamic architecture. Exhibiting for the first time, three domes placed adjacent to each other and arches and pockets etched with Qur'anic inscriptions. The unrefined structure of the domes suggests the work to have been of local artisans, not skilled in producing the more refined Arabian and Persian Domes that would later come to grace Islamic buildings. In the era the mosque was built, only the wealthy and affluent could afford handwritten copies of the Quran. For the majority, the Qur'anic inscriptions on mosques served to familiarize devotees with the words of the prophet. To know more, see the Farbound.Net snippet: The one that started a trend.Â
