History: For many generations after the death of Siddhartha Gautama, the great sage and wise man, more commonly known as the Buddha, was represented by his followers with signs and symbols, essentially his birthmarks. It was only during the reign of the Kushans in the 2nd A.D. that the first sculptures of the Buddha began to emerge. This sculpture of the Buddha in the wallpaper was possibly among the earliest to be created. It comes from the ancient region of Gandhara where art was heavily influenced by Greeko-Roman styles. It is displayed inside the National Museum Delhi.
