Showcase History. Display Heritage: Enrich your desktop and mobile phone with Farbound.Net's range of photoart wallpapers.

History: For many generations after the death of Siddhartha Gautama, the great sage and wise man, more commonly known as the Buddha, was represented by his followers with signs and symbols, essentially his birthmarks. It was only during the reign of the Kushans in the 2nd A.D. that the first sculptures of the Buddha began to emerge.

This sculpture of the Buddha in the wallpaper is the best work to emerge from the Gandharan School of Art. Produced between the 2nd and 3 A.D., it depicts an emaciated Siddhartha Gautama fasting for enlightenment - with ribs, veins and stretched skin beautifully sculpted out of stone and visible.

The sculpture comes from the ancient region of Gandhara where art was heavily influenced by Greeko-Roman styles. The original artefact is displayed at the Lahore Museum in Pakistan. To learn more about Gandharan Buddhas, see the Farbound.Net story: The Greek Buddha, on the Farbound.Net website.
