History: This artistic representation is of a sculpture of Maruti Bajrangabali Hanuman, a Vedic deity, at Hampi in Karnataka. The first mention of Hanuman is to be found in the Rigveda 1500-1200 BCE - in the text of which he is described as a divine monkey. Hanuman is a very popular deity among Hindus and over the centuries several myths and legends related to him have come into circulation.
