History: The Chalukya dynasty ruled in what is now the present-day state of Karnataka in India. Their reign had stretched from the 6th to the 12th century A.D., and like other kingdoms and empires of their time, they celebrated their way of life and religion with works of art, such as this stone sculpture that comes from the era of the Badami Chalukya, and depicts a pair of flying celestials. The Badami Chalukya's greatest regent was King Vijayaditya - a regent who after reestablishing the power of the Chalukyas after their subjugation by the Pallavas had ushered in a prosperous era.
