Greetings Card on Wisdom: Power of Destiny. Buddha Shakyamuni, 2nd century.

Spread love and wisdom with a message that highlights the power of destiny. Or simply send to spread awareness about monuments, artefacts and history. Our Greetings Cards don’t just allow you to convey emotions but also educate and make folks aware. This particular card features a photoart representation of a sculpture of an emaciated Buddha.

The sculpture is named “Shakyamuni” which literally means the “Sage of the Shakyas” – the clan the Buddha belonged to. It was produced by the sculptors of Gandhara in the 2nd century and is considered to be the best of all sculptures found up till now – for its detailing, refined work and realistic depiction of the human anatomy. The sculpture is housed at the Lahore Museum.

This artistic presentation is based on a photo of the sculpture that was taken by Percy Brown in 1908.

History: Legend has it that when Siddhartha of the Shakyas was born it was prophesied he would either become a great king or a great sage. His father, of the house Gautamas, and chief of the clan was desirous of him becoming a great king. Yet in spite of his best efforts, Siddhartha later became the Buddha.

This artistic presentation is based on a photo of a sculpture of Buddha fasting for enlightenment. The sculpture is known as Shakyamuni (sage of the Shakyas) and was produced in the 2nd century in the region of Gandhara. It is considered to be the best of all sculptures to be created in that era for its detailed and refined work, and for its realistic depiction of the Human anatomy. The sculpture is housed at the Lahore Museum in Pakistan.

The sculptors of Gandhara were influenced by Greek sculpting styles. To know more, see the Farbound.Net story: The Greek Buddha, on the Farbound.Net website.
