History: Legend has it that when Siddhartha of the Shakyas was born it was prophesied he would either become a great king or a great sage. His father, of the house Gautamas, and chief of the clan was desirous of him becoming a great king. Yet in spite of his best efforts, Siddhartha later became the Buddha.
This artistic presentation is based on a photo of a sculpture of Buddha fasting for enlightenment. The sculpture is known as Shakyamuni (sage of the Shakyas) and was produced in the 2nd century in the region of Gandhara. It is considered to be the best of all sculptures to be created in that era for its detailed and refined work, and for its realistic depiction of the Human anatomy. The sculpture is housed at the Lahore Museum in Pakistan.
The sculptors of Gandhara were influenced by Greek sculpting styles. To know more, see the Farbound.Net story: The Greek Buddha, on the Farbound.Net website.Â
