Here stands the statue of Stephenus Rex or King Stephen I or Saint Stephen, the first Christian King of Hungary. His mummified right hand is preserved at the St Stephen’s Basilica and his Crown, a living symbol, in the Parliament House. Both relics had been ‘kidnapped’. It was Empress Maria Theresa who returned the ‘hand’ and the government of the United States the ‘crown’ which had made its way through Austria to Fort Knox to finally making its way home in a major ceremony in January 1978.
