To handle an excess of wayfarers, whose numbers only continue to burgeon as the years speed by, the Ranchi Rajdhani Express service, a part of the Rajdhani Express family, currently operates six superfast trains during the week. Each identical to the other like a pair of twins.

The trains, scheduled to work in shifts by the Northern Railways, not only ensure passengers get to reserve their berths on board without having to wait their turn. But also help prevent a single train from being overworked.

On the stretch that connects New Delhi to Ranchi via the stations of Kanpur, Prayagraj, Upadhaya, Dehri, Gaya, Koderma and Bokaro Steel City. The Rnc Ndls Raj Exp is one among the six distant marathoners that ferry over a thousand passengers to their destination twice a week. To railway personnel, it is better known by its train number: 20840.

This bi-weekly train at the moment is the only train in its family to work a double shift between Delhi and Ranchi. The rest of its family members, the Rnc Ndls Raj Exp (Train No. 20407), the Rnc Ndls Raj Exp (Train No. 12453), the Rnc Rajdhani (Train No. 20408) and the Rnc Rajdhani (Train No. 12454), all operate on a weekly basis.

Hauled by a new-age WAP series locomotive capable of tugging a minimum of 24 indigenous-built LBH coaches on a broad gauge track, these superfast trains depart early evening to cover the maximum length of the distance during the night.

En route, they pass through some large tracts of picturesque Indian countryside sprinkled with lesser-known waystations, villages, and towns that falls between the two capitals – stopping only at predesignated stations.

The trains, like any twins, are not completely identical. They work on different days and operate at different speeds. They also stop at different stations en route to their destinations.

For instance, while the Ndls Rnc Raj Exp (Train No: 20840) works on Mondays and Fridays, making its run at a top speed of 74 kmph. Its family member, the Rnc Ndls Raj Exp (Train No: 20839) works Saturdays at a speed of 77 kmph – a schedule it shares with the Rnc Rajdhani (Train No: 12454), which also works on Saturdays, but at a speed of 71 kmph.
