Born on the 28th of January in 1899 Ce., Cariappa was a decorated officer of the British Indian army and who later went to become the commander-in-chief of the Indian Army. In 1986, he also succeeded Sam Manekshaw, to become the 2nd Field Marshal of the Indian army. His career spanned almost three decades and he was the recipient of eight prestigious military medals including the Order of the British Empire, the Burma Star, the Legion of Merit, the India Service Medal.
