History: This opaque watercolour on paper painting is of Shiva and Parvati as Ardhanarishvara. The painting, in essence, divides the human anatomy into a male and female half. To be more precise, it attributes the left side of the human brain with femininity and the right side of the brain with masculinity. The painting belongs to the Mankot School of Art. It comes from the Western Punjab Hills, and was created between 1710 and 1720 AD.
