Bhuntar, Himachal Pradesh, India.

True to its Tibetan name, the Dechen Choekhor Mahavira sits in the midst of peace and tranquillity on a small hilltop overlooking the scenic outskirts of Bhuntar in Himachal Pradesh. The Druoka Kayug monks here, trace their roots back to the 15th century when the first monastery of the order was founded in the region of Gongkar, Lhasa.

Buddhism reached Tibet in the 5th century B.C. but wasn’t until much later that it gradually gained prominence. Monasteries such as this one played an important role as schools for propagating the doctrines of the Buddha.

Disciples who left as masters of the faith would settle elsewhere to establish their own monastic institutions, thereby facilitating the spread of the religion.
