This declaration had contained a set of clear objectives for the allied nations to respect during their war against the Axis powers. Which had included the liberation of occupied territories, restoration of self-governments and lifting of trade embargos.

Churchill had publicly announced the agreement in the English Parliament, on the 24th of August 1941. Though at the time the United States had yet to commit its military resources in World War II.

His speech in December had taken place three weeks after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour on the 7th of December 1941. Spurred by Japanese aggression, the meeting had resulted in the official commitment of the United States in the war. Churchill had arrived in the U.S. to basically express solidarity and urge the United States to jointly combat the Axis powers.

The V Sign.

The V sign that now has now come to be famously associated with Winston Churchill was in essence not a British invention at all. But a sign used by local resistance groups in Europe against German occupation.

A sign the British Media had subsequently adopted with Churchill becoming instrumental in making it famous throughout the British empire and its armed forces.

While the British Prime Minister had been educated on how to properly represent the sign and its different connotations. He is known to have still gone ahead and make the sign with his palm facing inwards.

The Atlantic charter that Churchill and Roosevelt had drafted in 1941, was titled the ‘Declaration of the United Nations’. It later led to the creation of the present-day United Nations.
